English curriculum overview

At Rednal Hill Juniors, English lessons are linked with our exciting new curriculum topics. We are beginning to study key authors, poets, novels, picture books and film to immerse children in the joy of reading and book talk.

Writing is linked with what we are reading and the topics we are studying through the use of a variety of writing techniques. Within each writing genre we will be following the National Curriculum and developing our handwriting, spelling and grammar skills.

Across the year the children will learn to write:

  • a range of different story types
  • poems
  • information reports
  • newspaper reports
  • persuasive letter, leaflets, brochures and posters
  • discussion texts
  • recount letters, diaries and biographies
  • explanations

We will also be applying what we have learnt in other curriculum areas such as writing diaries in history and reports in science.

‘Read,Write,Inc Spelling’ is used to teach National Curriculum key spelling objectives. We also use ‘Letters and Sounds’ to teach phonics where necessary.

To teach reading we use a variety of schemes including Bug Club, Ginn pocket books and Rigby Star. All children have an appropriate individual reading scheme book which is taken home. In guided reading sessions children read in groups to develop reading skills and spend time talking about the books to improve their comprehension skills. We use the Reciprocal Reading approach during these sessions.

The key comprehension skills we are developing through this approach are:

  • predicting
  • clarifying
  • asking questions
  • summarising
