The Intent, implementation and Impact of our Curriculum – Science.
Here at Rednal Hill Junior School we understand the need for all of our children to develop their scientific knowledge, understanding and skills. Here at Rednal Hill Junior School, we provide a progressive and continuous Science Curriculum in which our children are able to explore and discover their world. We ensure that our children are taught all of the disciplines in Science and that they are able to articulate their understanding of these areas. As effective communication is at the heart of our school drive, we teach and have high expectations of pupils using, and understanding, key scientific vocabulary (please see ‘Knowledge Prompt Cards’ below). We encourage scientific speaking and listening during lessons and encourage pupils to transfer this into their written work.
Our fundamental aim is to equip children with exciting and empowering scientific experiences in order to motivate, inspire and encourage our pupils to have passion and interest within the subject. Our science curriculum is planned with our core values in mind and we strive to ensure that these are met through a variety of learning experiences.
At Rednal Hill Junior School we believe that through the delivery of high quality science education, we can provide the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science is constantly changing our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity. It is for this reason that we believe all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts in the form of a continual curriculum, pupils are encouraged to predict and explore, allowing them to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about scientific enquiry. By discovering key knowledge and facts children begin to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes. Pupils will gather knowledge and understanding based on how to conduct fair investigations across science topics and the language and expectations of this area is progressive across the year groups.
Science here is about developing children’s ideas allowing them to make sense of the world in which they live and begin to see the endless possibilities that lie ahead. Through our science curriculum, we ensure that children are exposed to high quality teaching and learning experiences. Children at Rednal Hill are provided with opportunities outside of the classroom environment which allow them to experience science in the real world through educational visits and experts visits into school.
By ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in science, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Planning for science is a process in which all teachers are involved to ensure that the school gives full coverage of, ‘The National Curriculum programmes of study for Science 2014’. Where possible, Science is linked to class topics. Science is taught as discrete units where needed to ensure coverage. Teachers adapt planning as needed to suit their children’s interests, needs, current events, their own teaching style and the use of any support staff and the resources available.
Class science teaching is further supplemented during PPA sessions where it is taught on a three week rolling programme by a specialist science teacher. The decision to do this was taken in order to raise the profile and standards of the subject. This approach allows for investigation work to be explored in far greater depth.
We ensure that all children are provided with rich learning experiences that aim to:
- Help them acquire a growing understanding of the nature, processes and methods of scientific ideas.
- Ensure children experience all five scientific enquiries: observation, testing, research, classifying and identifying and pattern seeking by becoming scientists in the classroom.
- Prepare them for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world today and in the future.
- Help develop and extend the scientific concept of their world.
- Develop a range of skills a range of skills through the working scientifically stand of the curriculum: measuring, analysing, presenting and reasoning
- Build on their natural curiosity and inspire them to develop a scientific approach to problems.
- Encouraging open-mindedness, self-assessment, perseverance and developing the skills of 3 investigation – including: observing, measuring, predicting, hypothesising, experimenting, communicating, interpreting, explaining and evaluating.
- Develop their use of scientific language, recording and techniques.
- Develop their use of computing in investigating and recording.
- Make links between science and other subjects.
At Rednal Hill Junior School we aspire to promote children’s independence and for all children to take responsibility in their own learning. Knowledge prompt cards allow children to access key words and descriptors enabling them to share their learning with parents and carers.
The impact and measure of this is to ensure children not only acquire the appropriate age related knowledge linked to the science curriculum, but also skills which equip them to progress from their starting points, and within their everyday lives.
All children will have:
- A wider variety of skills linked to both scientific knowledge and understanding, and scientific enquiry/investigative skills.
- A richer vocabulary which will enable to articulate their understanding of taught concepts.
- High aspirations, which will see them through to further study, work and a successful adult life.
At Rednal Hill we ensure that children are growing as scientists through regular monitoring opportunities. These take the form of pupil conferencing (in which children are encouraged to show their work and discuss the content).
The children’s knowledge and understanding are assessed before each unit of work. This takes place in the form of shower thoughts. This summarises knowledge and understanding of the key topic. These key points are used to identify the starting points and level of challenge for the children’s lessons. These initial assessments are then revisited at the end of the topic and new knowledge is outlined.
Formative assessment also takes place through end of topic quizzes and teacher assessment using the Educater programme.
Formal and informal book and planning scrutiny/monitoring by the science lead ensures that the pitch of work is appropriate for the year group and groups of learners. During these events, the science lead will focus on progress that is made, both overtime and within a lesson.
Gaps in learning are identified by the Science Coordinator and support is provided to support teachers in addressing this.
